Measure up for Curtains - A Step by Step Guide

Measure up for Curtains - A Step by Step Guide

Curtains are not only a stylish addition to your home but they also provide warmth and privacy.  To make curtains look their best and function properly, it's important to measure them accurately.  Don’t worry, we’ll guide you through the process, step by step!

Step 1: Measure the width

To begin measuring up for your curtains, you’ll need to measure the width of your existing curtain track.

If you don’t have an existing track, measure the width of the window frame from edge to edge.  Keep in mind how far beyond the window you’d like your curtain track to extend.  You’ll need to allow enough room either side so that when the curtains are drawn open they are clear of the window.  We advise allowing a minimum of 30cm either side of the window but for heavier fabrics it is better to allow more.

Step 2: Measure the drop

Choosing the right drop length for your curtains often comes down to personal preference.  Consider the style of your space, the type of curtains you want, and the height of your window.   Measure from the top of the track to the floor if you want curtains that touch the floor. If you want curtains that stop just below the window sill, measure to where you want them to stop.

If you're considering puddling, now's the time to decide.  For linen curtains, we recommend adding extra length (puddling) to your drop length.  This is because linen fibres are highly absorbent which makes them susceptible to movement.  If you allow for a bit of puddling, any movement will not be as noticeable.

Step 3: Consider the curtain heading

The heading of your curtains is the part that attaches to the rod or track.  The type of heading you choose will affect the quantity of fabric you need for your curtains.

Step 4: Double check your measurements

After measuring, double check your measurements to ensure they’re accurate.  It's always a good idea to measure twice to avoid any mistakes.  If you're not confident in your measuring skills, get in touch and we can point you in the direction of a professional to measure up for you.
